Happy Birthday to Winnie the Pooh

Winnie the Pooh celebrated his 80th birthday on Christmas Eve 2005. Walt Disney Productions will be celebrating throughout 2006. I've read five versions of this news story; only two have mentioned the artist who breathed life into that tired old bear: E. H . Shepard! All of Disney's artwork is based on Shepard's brilliant illustrations. Yet the artist is virtually ignored. Have you noticed that illustrators don't count as important artists in our culture? Film directors, yes; pop singers, maybe; illustrators, very rarely. So it's refreshing to see the Dulwich Picture Gallery showing an exhibition of the works of another fine British illustrator: Beatrix Potter. See Coxsoft's London page for more details.

According to a recent BBC article (23/12/05) reading cuts childhood injuries. Research shows that on days when the latest Harry Potter books were published, children's accidents fell dramatically! Art saves lives!
