Polynesian crafts at Sainsbury
The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, presents an exhibition of Polynesian art. Pacific Encounters: Art & Divinity in Polynesia 1760-1860 continues until 13 August 2006. Looks more like a crafts exhibition to me. You know the sort of thing: badly carved wooden gods with ivory teeth. The graphic apparently showing modern stainless steel tubing is allegedly a detail of a mid-18th c. bowl made of wood, pearl shell and boar's tusks. You sure about this, Sainsbury? Maybe your photographer shot a 20th century chair by mistake. I'd check this with the Brit. Museum, if I were you. And while I'm at it, if Sainsbury knows so much about art, how come Tesco's graphic designs are better than yours?
