$25m for Cézanne Melon
This week, Sotheby's New York sold Cézanne's watercolour Nature Morte au Melon Vert (c.1904) for $25m (£12.8m). Why would anyone buy this tosh? Look at the painting's history and you find the answer. It was previously owned by British Rail Pension Fund, which sold it in 1989 for £2.5m. From £2.5m to £12.8m in 18 years. Are your savings doing as well as this? For most of us, our savings barely keep up with inflation. So, forget the aesthetics of art. The smart money buys this tripe as an investment, nothing else. It goes into a vault until the next auction. Best place for it.
