Victorian Art in Utah

John William Waterhouse - Mariamne Leaving the Judgement Seat of Herod (1887) detailThe Victorian age with its avant-garde Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood saw the high water mark of great British art, and the quality has been sinking ever since. The term "Royal Academician" meant something in those days. Now it's a joke. William Holman Hunt, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John William Waterhouse and George Frederic Watts are some our finest artists whose work will be featured in Masterworks of Victorian Art from the Collection of John H. Schaeffer at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art in Provo, Utah, from 15 February until 16 August 2008. This detail from John William Waterhouse's Mariamne Leaving the Judgement Seat of Herod (1887) merely hints at the quality of work that will be on loan from the private collection of Aussie businessman John H. Schaeffer. Not to be missed. Will there be any divine nudes on display? I doubt it. Mormons are that strange crowd which banned Rodin's The Kiss as obscene!
