Portrait of Irene
What an incredibly snooty pose! Still, if this were a portrait of your mother which vanished in the Holocaust, you'd be overjoyed to see it again after 65 years. Recently, Freiherr Hugo von Habermann's Portrait of Irene (1920) was reunited with its rightful owner: Irene's son Rudolph Beran, now 94 years old and living in England. The painting had been seized by East German customs after the war, sold to the provincial government of Brandenburg and ended up in a castle in Potsdam.
