Jan Gossaert

Don't expect credit from this guy! City of London banker at a fancy dress party, you might think, but no; not enough luxury and the details are wrong. Jan Gossaert's Portrait of a Merchant (1530) perfectly captures the calculating stare of a man wondering how much he can fleece you for. This is one of over 80 paintings in Jan Gossaert's Renaissance, which opens at The National Gallery in London on 23 February and runs until 30 May (title link). The bad news is the price of admission: adults £10, silver surfers £9. Coxsoft tip: if silver surfers (60+) go on Tuesday after 2.30pm they pay only £5.
