Who Needs Twitter?

Classics professor Mary Beard, who burned her bra to become a TV celebrity, is the latest high-profile female victim of Twitter trolls (CLICK). She's received a bomb threat, which she's reported to the police, and even a rape threat from a myopic troll. "The abuse they've received is simply not acceptable. It's not acceptable in the real world, and it's not acceptable on Twitter,” says Tony Wang, Twitter UK general manager. But surely Twitter was designed for trolls or at least illiterate half-wits. It doesn't give you room to write anything interesting, just enough space for a quick threat. It's a waste of time. So why are so many highbrow women twittering? Is it an addiction? Can't survive a day without another Twitter fix? Ladies, you must go cold turkey. You have emails, don't you? Leave Twitter to the half-wits.
