Festival of Light

The Blackpool Illuminations may not strike you as the highest artistic achievement of Western Civilization, but Blackpool remains Britain's top tourist trap and its world-famous illuminations are the biggest temporary light show on the planet, short of war. David Tennant, who plays time lord Dr Who, switched them on yesterday. The Blackpool Festival of Light is part of these illuminations. Andy McKeown's Kaleidoscopia & Collecting Heads #3 (2007) is an example of contemporary artists' use of artificial light. The main illuminations last until 4 November.
