Transvangarde

Andrea Carlson - Mashkikii (Medicine) 2006Ever heard of Transvangarde? It's short for trans-cultural avant-garde, which the October Gallery in London claims is "the shape of things to come". It's been the "leading pioneer" of this Transvangarde stuff for at least 25 years, so there must be money in it. From 13 September to 27 October 2007 it will show Oshki-bawaajige: New Dreaming, the work of three native American Indian artists - Frank Big Bear, Andrea Carlson and Star Wallowing Bull - who can trace their ancestry back to the Ojibwe or "Chippewa" tribe. Andrea Carlson's Mashkikii (Medicine) is a pleasant graphic design which reminds me of a British postal stamp of 20 or 30 years ago. Avant-garde? Pull the other leg, October.
