Holzbein Best In Show
Brit. artist Horatio Holzbein (this name has got to be a nom-de-brush) has won Best In Show at Lantilly 2008 in France for his series of paintings based on the work of English caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) entitled "If Rowly had stayed in France". Rowlandson studied under Jacques Louis David in Paris, but earned a meagre living in Britain by drawing caricatures for various publications. Holzbein's series of paintings expand Rowlandson's sketches into grand works suited to a student of David, but retain their sense of humour. In Holzbein's hands, Three Gentlemen of Fashion becomes Constructors of Glass Ceilings (2008). And don't we all know about them! Is that Sir Nick on the left?
