Forensic Art 2008

Dr Caroline Wilkinson - Facial ReconstructionWhile so-called "contemporary art" sinks into a bog of its own making, computer generated art is taking giant strides into the future. Two years ago I posted an item on Forensic Art which mentioned three of the leaders in the field: Karen T. Taylor (USA), Dr Caroline Wilkinson and Caroline Needham (UK). CLICK for a haunting image. Dr Wilkinson has now adapted computer 3D modelling to speed up the process of forensic facial reconstruction. CT scanning allows non-invasive capture of a skull's dimensions. Her database holds pre-modelled facial muscles as well as ears, noses, eyes, skin and hair. The images above show the early stages of reconstruction. Lifelike images are then produced. Even with hi-tech aid, it's still painstaking work and very impressive.
