Saatchi's Latest Winner

A Saatchi Showdown Voter (2008)I can't help wondering whether visitors who vote for Showdown entries at the Saatchi Gallery Online are all depressives. The three winning entries so far have all been sombre, virtually black and white images with no aesthetic appeal. Click the title link to see the latest winning entry by Marco Hüttmann, who receives £1,000 for his ambiguous image. Keep taking the Valium, folks.

I think navigating that poorly designed site could make anyone depressed. Some parts of Saatchi's online efforts look like one huge ad bomb. I've had trouble remembering where to sign in.

Hi, Balhatain

I agree. Navigation is awful, the double sidebars hinder, rather than help, and the light background doesn't do the artwork any favours. The only way I find my way about is by receiving Saatchi's e-newsletter and clicking on any link that interests me. Even then, the link doesn't always take me to the right place!

However, as the programmer who helped design the Saatchi website is one of my readers (or was) I must point out that web designers are lumbered with their clients' demands. If the client wants to throw in everything but the kitchen sink - that too, thinking of Saatchi - and doesn't care if his site isn't user friendly, then that's what the programmers must provide.

So far, Saatchi's website hasn't crashed my PC or prompted IE to give me Error-on-page messages. So the programming is competent. But I wish Saatchi would apply for my Silver Surfer Friendly Award, so I could tell him in detail how his website stinks. Visit my Winners page to see websites with good navigation.
