W. John Thorpe

Here's a perfect example of how scraperboard (US scratchboard) can be used to create a picture that is stronger and more dramatic than a photograph: Madiba (2008) by W. John Thorpe. Ironically, John created this fine portrait of Nelson Mandela in response to the challenge of a long-standing friend who didn't believe he was a talented artist. (John hadn't created any new artwork for 21 years!) Thanks to the friend's interest and encouragement, John is now building an excellent online portfolio of portraits and African wildlife.
