Any idea who gets to decide? Can we vote for them, is it democratic Ian?
Trust you are well.
Hi, Robert
I'm fine, thanks. Hope the same for you.
No, this isn't democratic. It's a panel of judges. If you visit The Art Fund website, you should find a list, probably made up of the usual suspects.
P.S.
Come to think of it, this prize wouldn't be suitable for public voting. The judges need to visit all four galleries/museums on the short list to make comparisons. You can't expect the public to do that. Everyone would vote for their local gallery or museum to gain the cash prize, and local councils would probably try to rig the vote too.
We had that when funds were to be made available to do up selected parks in London. The council put out leaflets asking everyone to vote for their favourite park in the borough. It worked. We gained one of the cash awards.
