White House Rockwell

US President Barack Obama requested the loan of this Norman Rockwell painting for display in the White House to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ruby Bridges' walk into the William Frantz Public School, which had been all white prior to a legal challenge. The Norman Rockwell Museum was honoured to oblige (title link). Rockwell's The Problem We All Live With (1963) was painted a few years later, inspired by Ruby's walk, and published by Look magazine in January 1964. It's one of his most powerful paintings and a favourite of mine.

Some people argue that Rockwell was not an artist but an illustrator. I think he was a top-class illustrator and a true artist. His paintings always carry such a strong message and this one is a great example of that.

Hi, Tootle

Glad you agree with me. Many of the old masters tell stories, e.g. Caravaggio. His The Card Sharp is telling a story just like Rockwell does. Do we call Caravaggio a mere illustrator?

Rockwell is one of the greats. Type his name into my Blogger search box to find more examples of his work. The Dulwich Gallery in London had an exhibition of his paintings. You may have missed it.
