Shark News

Good news for sharks: the Bahamas has banned shark fishing in its waters, which cover 243,000 square miles (title link). In effect the new law, approved in Nassau yesterday, has created a shark sanctuary. It also prohibits the sale, import and export of shark products. The Bahamas follows Honduras, the Maldives and Palau in outlawing shark fishing. The Chinese are going to have to obtain their shark fins for soup elsewhere. Shark tourism is estimated to be worth $80m a year to the Bahamas. So it's a win-win piece of legislation.
