More Shark News

The Marshall Islands is the latest Pacific nation to ban shark fishing in its territorial waters, creating the world's largest shark sanctuary covering 750,000 square miles (title link). The Bahamas banned shark fishing in its waters earlier this year, covering 243,000 square miles (CLICK). The Maldives and Honduras have already followed Palau's example of outlawing shark fishing in its 230,000 square miles of ocean in 2009 (CLICK). So why am I showing a photo of Manta Rays? They are relatives of sharks and hopefully will benefit from shark sanctuaries. I recently watched a fascinating Natural World programme on BBC Two Andrea - Queen of Mantas, which revealed the latest findings in manta ray research and the need for their protection (CLICK).
