Digital Layers
Arts Council England has granted the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge £87,582 to digitize its outstanding collection of illuminated manuscripts, creating an online archive: the Digital Layers. Due to the fragility of illuminated manuscripts, they cannot be displayed for very long. So an online archive will bring them to a wider audience. Moreover, using advanced non-invasive imaging and spectroscopic techniques they can be analysed to reveal their scientific secrets. Coupled with layer and zooming tools, these images will also display their historical and cultural context (CLICK).
