Art Detective

The collaboration between the Public Catalogue Foundation (PCF) and the BBC with its Your Paintings website has exposed an appalling lack of knowledge about paintings in British public art collections. Over 25,000 paintings are by unknown artists. 8,000 portrait sitters are unidentified. Thousands of paintings are lacking information about the places or events depicted. So the PCF has created the groundbreaking Art Detective website, where members of the public and people with specialist knowledge can pool their ideas. Shown is London Bridge from the Atkinson Art Gallery Collection, artist unknown, probably painted pre-1920. That it is badly in need of cleaning doesn't help identify it.
