Virginia Woolf
I love George Charles Beresford's photo of Virginia Woolf, taken in 1902. He captures her classical Greek profile, her feminine neck, her unfussy hairstyle and that faraway look that suggests a strong mind gazing into the future. This is not a woman who paints her fingernails. This is a real portrait photo, not a snap of a celebrity. Virginia Woolf: Art, Life and Vision opens at London's National Portrait Gallery, in the Porter Gallery, on 10 July, entry £6.30 adults, £5.90 silver surfers (CLICK)
