Rosebery Turner

Tomorrow Tate Britain opens The EY Exhibition: Late Turner – Painting Set Free (CLICK). What better time for Sotheby’s in London to auction one of the last paintings by J.M.W. Turner still in private hands? Rome from Mount Aventine (1835) was purchased by the 5th Earl of Rosebery, later Prime Minister of Great Britain, in 1878 for a record £6,142. It comes up for grabs in Sotheby’s Old Master & British Paintings Evening Sale in London on 3 December with a conservative estimate of £15m to £20m (CLICK).
