The Hobbit

This first edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (1937) fetched £137,000 at Sotheby's London sale. The novel is dedicated to one of his first students at Leeds University: Miss Katherine ("Kitty") Kilbride and was sent with a handwritten note in Elvish. Miss Kilbride was an invalid and Tolkien sent her letters, cards and his newly published books throughout his life (CLICK).
