I personally like Rafael Rodriguez' painting the has an engaging quality to it.

I know what you mean. Rodriguez's Model 1 has a warm, mumsy appearance. She's the subject you'd most like to meet. But to me this work looks like a snap taken by an amateur photographer who got too close to the subject and used a wide-angle lens that caused distortion of the image. Maybe Lola's nose is that big! Angela Reilly's Self Portrait shows a 39-year-old woman taking a long hard look at herself. No makeup. No glamour. Remorseless honesty and bags of character. Conveying character, not just a good likeness is what the best portraiture is about. Having said that, I bet she comes third.
