BP Portrait Award 2006

BBC News has posted portraits by the 3 artists shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award 2006, worth £25,000 plus a £4000 commission. The winner will be announced in June and the top 56 entries will go on display at the National Portrait Gallery from 15 June. Coxsoft Art's vote goes to Angela Reilly for her Self Portrait. I know what you mean. Rodriguez's Model 1 has a warm, mumsy appearance. She's the subject you'd most like to meet. But to me this work looks like a snap taken by an amateur photographer who got too close to the subject and used a wide-angle lens that caused distortion of the image. Maybe Lola's nose is that big! Angela Reilly's Self Portrait shows a 39-year-old woman taking a long hard look at herself. No makeup. No glamour. Remorseless honesty and bags of character. Conveying character, not just a good likeness is what the best portraiture is about. Having said that, I bet she comes third.
