George Stubbs

George Stubbs - A Horse Frightened by a Lion (1770) detailGeorge Stubbs: A Celebration at Tate Britain marks the 200th anniversary of the death of one of England's greatest painters: George Stubbs (1724-1806). The exhibition brings together at least two dozen of his greatest paintings and includes a Wedgwood plaque in blue and white jasper relief made to a Stubbs' design: The Fall of Phaeton (1780). Admission is free. This is a must! It continues until 14 January 2007. Yanks take note: this exhibition heads to the Frick Collection, New York, next year. And a caustic note for the Brit. Art Establishment: George Stubbs was self-taught and he was never elected as a Royal Academician, due to a dispute with the RA!
