ARC Scholarship Winners

Left: Cody Swanson - Eve; right: Shane Wolf - Isadora (both 2006?)Real art is alive and well and living at the Art Renewal Center (or Centre, if you're English). Above are works by two of the winners of the 2006 ARC Scholarship Awards: Cody Swanson (Eve, left) First Place and Shane Wolf (Isadora, right) Fourth Place. To view enlarged versions of these glorious artworks and to see the other winners, click the title link. For me, these two entries stood out; but that's merely personal preference. The standard is extremely high. Note the unglamorous media used: Eve is made of clay, Isadora is drawn with charcoal on paper. A bronze version of Eve has been purchased by ARC. Good move. If you want to buy genuine art, these are the young artists to buy from while they're still in art school and need the money!

Hello,
Thank you for your comments about my Isadora drawing. Seeing those two images juxtaposed, one might think it was the same model (almost!). If you're interested, I can send you my web link once it's up.

Hi, Shane

Thanks for contacting me. Please do send me your website address when the site is up and running. I'll do a post on your art.

Your Isadora is one of the best nudes I've seen in a long time, beautifully posed and executed, in charcoal!

The only other outstanding charcoal drawings I've seen in the last few years were John Singer Sargent's two portraits of the Queen Mother when she was still Lady Bowes-Lyon. So you're in excellent company.

Why not visit my award page?

You'll find a list of my dislikes about websites, worth bearing in mind if you're still at the design stage. My Winners page includes 3 other award-givers: Cameradio, Feebleminds Animated GIFs and Salamanders Young Burn Survivors (this links to an award site run by the same webmistress). All three sites have lists of criteria for winning their awards. If you can tick all those criteria, you will have a very user-friendly website. That's half the battle when trying to promote your art.

Another website on my Winners page is Les Edwards Illustration. Les is the UK's top fantasy artist. See how he sells his art online.

Hello!
After a whopping 8 months, I FINALLY have my website up and running (since end of february actually... being a web design newbie took its toll!)

www.shane-wolf.com

I'm about ready to update it with new paintings, but once I remembered that I never responded to your post, I didn't want to procrastinate!

Thanks for your comments about my charcoal work. I'm a huge fan of Sargent's many charcoal portraits. When I first started dabbling in portraiture, I studied his drawings intently, trying to learn as much as I could. I still do, as his command of his media is exceptional.

I'm about ready to graduate from the Angel Academy of Art here in Florence, and attempt to make the transition from student to professional painter... it's going to be a wild ride I'm sure!

all the best,
shane

Hi, Shane

I'd wondered what happened to you. Thanks for getting in contact again. I'll visit your website tomorrow. Hopefully I can have your permission to post one of your artworks on my blog.

You've reminded me that I haven't visited ARC lately. Must do that.

By coincidence, today I also received an email from the Mall Galleries in London publicizing a new award for figurative art. It might be too trendy and "modern" for you, but it would be worth visiting the Mall Galleries website to see what it's about. Big money prize for the winner. I'll probably post news about it on my blog soon. So watch this space.

Thanks for the word about Mall Galleries. I am not eligible however, as I don't live or work in the UK. I'll be curious to see what wins though.

If you would like to post one of my images on your site, you have my permission to do so. I'd be honored!

all the best,
shane

Hi again, Shane

Thanks for permission to use one of your beautiful artworks on my blog.

I visited your new website this morning and left a couple of comments there. I'd intended to pay it a quick visit and spent at least an hour browsing!

I see you paint portraits too. The BP Portrait Award is one of the UK's biggest awards and it is international. Type Portrait Award in my search box and see what you find. The standard is so high that just to get an honorable mention is a major career builder. The exhibition attracts BBC News.

Watch out for my post on your art and website, coming soon.

Thanks again.
