London's Latest Statue

Alan Wilson - Building Worker (2006)I finally got a photo of London's latest statue: Alan Wilson's Building Worker, commissioned by the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT) to commemorate men who die on our building sites. UCATT General Secretary Alan Ritchie unveiled it at Tower Hill last Wednesday. Why do statues of workers always look Soviet? I guess it's all those Commie images of heroic peasants wielding hammers and sickles before they took up gun-running and white-slaving and invaded Britain. This one's holding a spirit level, but he still looks Soviet. He cost £100,000. No wonder lower paid workers in the UK can't afford to join a union!
