An Emin Up The Pole

Tracey Emin posing in front of her flag (2007)BBC News seems to think that if it keeps calling Tracey Emin an "artist" for long enough we might start to believe it. No way. Her latest arrogant folly is a huge flag with the message One Secret is to Save Everything against a backdrop of swimming sperm. The sperm are needed to make this tripe risqué - it must be controversial - and the message is needed to give the impression that Ms Emin has something profound to say. She doesn't. And sperms are commonplace. This piffle - the second in a series of Southbank Centre commissions - will be up its flagpole until 31 July. The blurb is supplied by Ralph Rugoff, director of the Hayward Gallery, who lauded Ms Emin's "precise sense of paradox and ambiguity in subverting what might be a reassuring formula for happiness"! How's that go again, Ralph? You don't seriously expect any intelligent person to believe that bull, do you?

I had hoped to make the unveiling but couldn't get there in time. I think that you misunderstand the role Miss Emin as an artist and perhaps even the mode of your own time. Views such as yours are actually laughable. Good luck with your blog anyway.

Best, Breeze

Hi, Nick
You're the first person to write to me to defend Tracey Emin. One artist wrote that he grinds his teeth whenever her name crops up.
I can't see that there's anything to misunderstand about Ms Emin. She holds the arrogant, elitist view that if she calls it art it is art. This view is shared by the UK Art Establishment. So she's the darling of the elite, and a laughing stock for everyone else. You're the one who's out of touch.
One of England's most famous contemporary artists is Nick Parks, who has won fame, wealth and Oscars with his own unique brand of sculpture. Ever heard of him? He reflects the mode of our time far better than does Ms Emin. She is passé.
Thanks for your kind wishes on my blog. Good luck with Tate Modern. I understand it's still playing second fiddle to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Take a tip from Coxsoft Art and add a Dodgems and a rollercoaster to your helter-skelter. Let's face it, if you call 'em art, they are art.

"MODE OF OUR TIME"??
Wot, you mean like trash, rubbish, dumbed down education [and Art diplomas], crap, exploitation, sham, con artists, bullshit, spin, obfuscation, lying, land fill sites, fly-tipping, pavement pizzas, technicolour yawns, the new rich getting pissed on new red and spilling it up on the tube on their way home. Oh Yes, she sums up our times quite well!

I get a laugh out of artists like Tracey Emin, because theyre probably laughing at the people that buy their work and give them attention.

I still admire her for being successful though. When the media stop writing about her, I will probably admire her less, because she wouldnt be doing her job.

I should stop measuring artists by the amount of print published about them! ;-)

I liked your quote from Andy Warhol (?): "Don't read what they write about you; just measure it in inches"! That sums up the art market. My view is the bigger the blurb the worse the art. Maybe if we all ignore Emin she'll go away.
