Doris's Crack
Back in April, Coxsoft Art News reported that "Tate Modern has commissioned Doris Salcedo to create something to fill space in its Turbine Hall" (CLICK). My guess was a stack of chairs, because that's what the Colombian "sculptress" is infamous for. But no. Today, Tate Modern unveiled Doris's latest load of tripe: a crack in the floor which took 5 weeks to excavate! It's called Shibboleth 2007 and runs the full length of the Turbine Hall, starting with a hairline fracture and ending in a pit large enough to lose a child. Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota insists Doris's crack isn't an optical illusion. You twit, Nick! If it were an optical illusion, it could be classified as a work of art. As a real crack it's just a danger to the public. I'm amazed Health & Safety passed it. Close it down before somebody breaks a leg!
