No Cowboys in Dulwich

Shock! Horror! The Dulwich Picture Gallery in London has gone all Yankified! Coming of Age: American Art, 1850s to 1950s allegedly shows how "American art and culture came of age, evolving from the provincial to the international". How's that for the Brit. Art Establishment patronizing those colonials out in the sagebrush? Don't believe a word of it. The good news is that it isn't all "international" tripe from Jackson Pollock and this ca 1924 abstract by Patrick Henry Bruce. There are some great American names too: John Singer Sargent, James McNeill Whistler, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer and Eastman Johnson. But where are those artists who created truly American art: Frederick Remington, Maxfield Parrish, Norman Rockwell and Walt Disney? Adopts toffee-nosed English accent: "Too damned provincial, Carruthers"!
