Aussie Nude Teens Row

Bill Henson - Nude (2008)Art News Blog (title link) has published one of Bill Henson's photos of a naked 13-year-old which caused Aussie fuzz to go bananas and close his exhibition at the Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery in Sydney (CLICK). Here it is, so you can decide for yourselves. I can't comment on seized photos I haven't seen, but this one is a sensitive, discreet, beautifully backlit photo of a pretty teenager. So her breasts are bare. Big deal. She would show far more of her anatomy when walking up the beach in a wet bikini. If this is what Aussie PM Kevin Rudd describes as "revolting", he's a complete plonker. So I'm tentatively with Kate Blanchett on this one. She and 42 other arty types signed an open letter defending the photos and commenting that the police action risks damaging Australia's cultural reputation (CLICK). One thought seems to have eluded everyone who's making hysterical accusations: Did the parents sign consent forms for these photo shoots? I'll bet they did.

Exactly.

What I dislike in these situations are all those fatheads who start complaining before they've seen what they're complaining about.

Thanks for the link, although most videos overload my old PC. The gallery link I posted is to those Henson exhibition photos that weren't grabbed by the Aussie police.

I wanted to post this photo on my website but was frankly afraid to. See here in the US we are all about "protecting" kids no matter how many we let die (i.e. lack of medical) or have to kill outright. You often here the refrain from the arms technician "I'm doing it for my kids." The corporate leader, the mass media propagandist "reporter", the military contractor. They all do it for their kids. If we get any nicer to kids here they'll all be dead.

Americans are Victorian in many ways. Sneeze on a woman under 18 and you get done for statutory rape! The age of consent in Japan is 14, which is far more realistic.

It's a beautiful photo. I wonder what the poor girl feels with loonies complaining her photo is pornographic.

I covered up a couple bits of the photo on my blog as too many loonies were emailing me. I'm also on holiday and just couldn't be bothered with their crap.

Rabbit, it is funny how those on their high horse claim a monopoly on morality and yet are happy to send their kids off to other countries to kill and be killed.

Society is one warped piece of work, regardless of the country. One day we might all wake up.

Hi, Woopidoo

Fortunately I've been spared the loonies. I've had only one negative comment and its negativity was aimed at Henson, not at me (comment on Henson Vindicated).

I suspect a lot of the more vindictive stuff comes from people who are trying to repress their own unconscious sexual desires toward youngsters, what you might call the "I don't wanna be a child-abuser, so don't tempt me" brigade. I suspect "poof-bashers" are the same. You can't expect such people to be entirely rational.

In fact I've given up on the naive idea of rational-economic Man and am a firm believer in Rachman's Primacy of Affect (we're ruled by our emotions, not by our brains, and the process of thought is merely to rationalize what irrational acts our emotions drive us to do.)

That's why I trust my gut feelings on art and ignore the blurbs. My gut feeling on Henson's photos have been good so far. I'm waiting for a complainant to send me a real porno picture from Henson. I'm sure it won't happen.

Thank you for your very sensible and objective comment. It's a pity there aren't more adults with your sense and maturity as a teenager.

There's nothing pervy about wanting to compare yourself with other girls of your age. It's natural. And this is a nice, healthy teenager with whom to make a comparison.

Too many teenaged girls compare themselves to knock-kneed stick-insect fashion models or artificially buxom pinups or drop-dead gorgeous movie stars smothered in makeup.

Such comparisons cause a lot of unnecessary anxiety and low self-esteem.
