V&A Buys Stones Logo

John Pasche - Rolling Stones Logo (1972)London's V&A Museum has bought the original artwork of the Rolling Stones famous logo for £51,375 ($92,500) with the help of The Art Fund, which paid half the cost. John Pasche, the artist who designed the logo, was paid £50 for his work, but the Stones were so pleased with the design that they paid him a bonus of £200. From £250 to £51,375 in 36 years; isn't inflation a pain! What will the V&A do with it? A Rolling Stones exhibition maybe?

Will John get it?

Hi, Robert

Actually he gets the lot and he's putting his son through college with the proceeds. After I wrote this post I saw him interviewed on BBC London News, which you won't have seen out in the wilds of Dorset. He sold the logo to the Stones, but kept the original artwork for himself. Good move!

They're discussion royalties or droit de suite in Canada at the moment. Be interesting to see how that turns out. (One of my contacts is a Canadian artist who keeps posting me interesting snippets about the Canadian art scene. She runs the dogdy art shows blog in my links.)
