Vorticism

I try not to show this sort of tripe on London Art News, but Dorothy Shakespear's Composition in Blue and Black (c.1914-15) is part of a major exhibition at Tate Britain which opened yesterday: The Vorticists: Manifesto for a Modern World (title link). This British art movement lasted as long as World War I (1914-1918) and may be seen as a reaction to that maelstrom. It produced only two exhibitions, one in London, the other in New York. Its finest work was Jacob Epstein’s iconic sculpture Rock Drill 1913-15 (CLICK). Over 100 key pieces have been brought together for this show. The feminists at BBC News are chuffed to find some female artists in the movement: CLICK for Women of the Vortex. If their daubs don't put you off, note the admission prices: £12.70 adults, £10.90 silver surfers. Ripoff! No way.
