Joseph Wright

The Derby Museum and Art Gallery is fortunate to have 30 paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby, one of England's finest artists, a master of chiaroscuro who was fascinated by science. Shown is his Three Persons Viewing the Gladiator by Candle-light (1765), which illustrates his use of chiaroscuro to create dramatic effect, but he also painted landscapes and portraits. The Museum is planning a "blockbuster" exhibition of 100 of his paintings, borrowed from Tate Britain, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and from private collections unseen by the public. A world tour of the exhibition is planned (CLICK). As Tate Britain is one of the partners, there's a good chance it will come to London. I'll keep you posted.
