Constable in Washington

Constable - View on the Stour near Dedham (1822)The exhibition Constable's Great Landscapes: The Six-Foot Paintings has moved from Tate Britain to the USA and opened today at the National Gallery of Art, East Building, Washington, DC. It continues until 31 December, then moves to California, where it reopens at The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, on 3 February 2007. As I've said before, prints don't do justice to Constable's art. You need to move in front of one of his great oil paintings to see the light shift from one leaf to another. Then you realize why he is one of the greatest landscape painters of all time. Not to be missed.
