HSBC Yan Shu Art

Left: United Visual Artists - HSBC Yan Shu Commission 'Cultural Exchange'; Right: I.C. - Tower of Baggage (2008)Thinking of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 (next post down) reminds me that HSBC - "the world's local bank" - commissioned a pair of Yan Shu neon sculptures from United Visual Artists (CLICK) showing Chinese characters to mark HSBC's sponsorship of China Design Now at the V&A Museum (title link). I can't help regarding a tower of baggage as a more appropriate art installation for Terminal 5. So here it is, on the right. Welcome to London plc, folks. Try not to get too stroppy.

Why buy Chinese for this No-name dreck?

Good question, Cap. Maybe a Triad gang made HSBC an offer it couldn't refuse!

Generally the London arts scene has been sucking up to China for the last year or two. The V&A's China Design Now show is just one example. My guess is corporate greed is behind it all. China is a huge player in world markets.

Well it's not just the London Art Scene. I see in NY The Gugg is preparing a retrospective for one of these Chinese wannabes - is it Ai Weiwei? (or I-Y-Y?) anyway Chinese Sucko Numero Uno gets the Gugg treatment and for what?

Ten years (?) maybe - of second hand conceptualism? Of cheesy spectacle in all the art world's hotspots and Bi-anythings? Talk about standards sagging, NY she out on her feet.

FREE TIBET IN THE NAME OF ART1

Yeah, what does the Gugg know about art? It's part of the Anti-art Establishment, which exists on both sides of the Atlantic.

There are a lot of Chinese artists who escaped from Communism. I guess they deserve a showing around the world, even if they're rubbish.

But last year London went OTT with a three- or four-months season of "official" Chinese art. Half our museums and galleries put on some sort of Chinese show. That was really sucking up to Beijing. The Yanks haven't gone that far yet.

Have you even broken through The Great Firewall of China yet? I've had one mention, thanks to Art News Blog, which has broken through.

I might do a blog on this. China is supposed to be allowing freer Internet access for the Games.
