La Surprise

Jean-Antoine Watteau - La Surprise (Christie's Images Ltd) slightly enhancedHere's a larger graphic of Jean-Antoine Watteau's La Surprise, so you can see what I mean about the BBC's description (next post down). Can you imagine a couple becoming so passionate over somebody tuning his guitar? Even the pooch is looking askance at them.

With-in a brisk walk of Marble Arch and Selfridges just North of Oxford street is the Wallace Collection which has a very fine collection of Watteau, Boucher and Fragonard

There are two rooms upstairs which house the best seat in London between them. They are filled with quite the most delightful paintings and objects; the jewel amongst them is a portrait by Lebrun.

Hi, Robert

Thanks for reminding me. It's ages since I last visited the Wallace Collection. Great house with all sorts of art and artifacts. Model soldiers too, or am I thinking of somewhere else?

It doesn't get the publicity it deserves, probably because its collection is static. I've earmarked it for a future post.

Thanks coxsoft art, yes there is some armour but the collection of other stuff is wonderful. One of my e friends (serious museum/ gallery man) suggested that one should only look at one work on each visit to a museum. If this was to be adhered to, you would never need to go any where else but the Wallace! It is a little bit like visiting an annex of The Palace of Versailles as there are a number of things bought from the Revolutionary French Government who obviously needed cash at some stage! Good place for lunch too I think.

Hi again, Robert

I found your website via your Blogger profile and have just sent you an e-mail on the subject.

Off to the Wallace Collection now, the Google way.
