This is one of 360 illustrations from The Pictures And Diary Of A Wartime Artist (2008), an e-book published to mark the 90th anniversary of the Armistice. The diary was kept by Len Smith, a commercial artist from Walthamstow, who enlisted in the 7th London Battalion and sailed for France in 1915. Due to his ability as an artist, he became a sapper in the Royal Engineers Special Branch. One of his duties was to crawl into No Man's Land to sketch enemy positions!
