Len Smith, Artist of War

Len Smith - Accommodation (ca 1915-18)This is one of 360 illustrations from The Pictures And Diary Of A Wartime Artist (2008), an e-book published to mark the 90th anniversary of the Armistice. The diary was kept by Len Smith, a commercial artist from Walthamstow, who enlisted in the 7th London Battalion and sailed for France in 1915. Due to his ability as an artist, he became a sapper in the Royal Engineers Special Branch. One of his duties was to crawl into No Man's Land to sketch enemy positions! He survived the war and died in 1974 aged 83. His drawings and war diary remained private, a family treasure, until recently. Click my title to sample his book for free with no obligation to buy.
