Fake Security Ad

Above you see that booby-trapped advert which hit the London Stock Exchange website a few days ago; about 363 of its webpages had hosted the fake ad (CLICK). It also hit Autotrader, the Vue cinema chain and six other sites. The innocent source of the ads was Unanimis, which moved swiftly to remove them. It blames "unauthorised access" to the ad servers which enabled the cyber criminals to insert their malicious code (title link). What surprises me is that this is old malware and should have been guarded against. I first spotted it on a library database some years ago. The modern version is the Indian call centre which warns you of viruses on your computer and tries to persuade you to visit its website for a cure (CLICK). Make no mistake, these people are criminals. Foreign criminals. Note the misspelling in the above ad: "YOUR'RE IN DANGER!". Poor grammar too.

eBay was also affected although they haven't publicly admitted it. Norton Internet Security blocked it - but "The Register" comments report that Avast didn't.

It seems to hit big databases. The only one I've come across personally was on an official library database. I spotted it and, after a brief discussion, the council IT people removed it. As I wrote in my post, that was a few years ago. And it's still around!
