Women's Day

Did you know that today is International Women's Day? BBC News doesn't. In fact today is the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, which, if your maths are as good as mine, began in 1911 (title link). So what does this mean for the art lark? Having scoured the planet, I found two exhibitions that are pertinent to Women's Day. The first is Heroines, presented by Museo Thyssen Bornemisza and FundaciĆ³n Caja Madrid (CLICK). This is all about feminist empowerment, with females putting the boot in. Ladettes in the UK were there yonks ago: the number of women found guilty of murder, vicious assault and other attacks rose by 81 per cent in the period from 1998 to 2009 (CLICK). The second is 42, an exhibition of 42 photos of women of Sierra Leone by Brit. photographer Lee Karen Stow. You'll find this exhibition in Liverpool's International Slavery Museum (CLICK). Entry is free.
