Gauguin Attacked

On Friday, Susan Burns allegedly attacked Paul Gauguin's Two Tahitian Women (1899) in the National Gallery in Washington DC. The famous painting, which is on loan from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, was hung behind a Plexiglas cover and wasn't damaged. One of the gallery's security officers restrained Ms Burns. Police charged her with attempted theft and destruction of property. She told them Gauguin was "evil" and his painting should be burned. Yesterday a court decided to hold her pending a mental evaluation. The painting should be back on display later today.
