Weiwei Waylaid

Chinese publicity-seeker and non-artist Ai Weiwei was waylaid on Sunday morning at Beijing airport by border security on his way to Hong Kong. His assistant, Jennifer Ng, was allowed to continue her journey. A few hours after Weiwei was detained, more than 40 police officers raided his Beijing studio and confiscated dozens of items. There has been no news of him for 24 hours. If he had been arrested for dumping 100 million poisonous hand-made sunflower seeds on Tate Passé, I'd be all for it; but the likelihood is that he's been arrested for speaking out against China's record on human rights. Totalitarian regimes usually consign their critics to lunatic asylums. CLICK for a Telegraph slide show of WeiWei's non-art.

He was charged and tried for possibly stealing nuclear secrets, not making art. He went to jail and then got out on time served. He was cleared of most charges, but he still stands convicted of a lesser charge of stealing government documents. And the President of the United States issued a public apology to him for the mistake.
