Sea Gypsies

Those of you who watched BBC's Human Planet series will already have seen a real-time freedive by Sulbin of the Bajau people of South-East Asia, "Sea Gypsies" as they're called. If you missed it, CLICK for the video. It's a breathtaking underwater ballet. Survival International has posted a slide show of the Moken or "Sea Gypsies" by acclaimed photographer Cat Vinton (title link). This sample photo shows a Moken boy jumping into the sea. Moken children learn to swim before they can walk. Scientific research found that they have unusually strong underwater vision, twice as strong as European children. When you've viewed the slide show, click the Survival Home button to learn how this registered charity helps tribal peoples and defends their rights throughout the world. You can join or receive monthly e-news.
