Fresh Faced

On 2 June I posted The Photographers' Gallery's invitation for recent UK graduates of photography to submit work to its Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed 2011 competition (CLICK). The winners are now online (title link). Don't expect great photos, but at least these entries are competent, which is more than can be said for the work of many art-school graduates. The most intriguing entry is a series of photos by Andrew Bruce called Tender, which show a naked young man holding a variety of dead animals, road kills with an occasional dribble of artificial blood. (Dead animals don't bleed.) Above is Andrew's Tender #01, which shows his young man holding a dead fox. Andrew says: "We divide the landscape and exclude nature from our day-to-day existence; we barely notice the ‘thud’ against our vehicle when we literally come into contact with animals." Not in my back garden, we don't; but I like the green message and the novel idea.
