Greek Referendum?

Papandreou is neither bastard or idiot. And if you think for, say, about three minutes, his move with referendum makes a lot of sense. He wanted Greeks to show responsibility for their country, that is the point of being democracy.

I'm sure he isn't a bastard. I was just guessing what Merkel called him. She was furious, having worked out a deal to save Greece and the euro, he ruined it with his call for a referendum. The stock markets plunged as a result.

His referendum nonsense had two aims: 1) for him to stay in power, and 2) to stave off a revolt by the Greek people.

His idiocy is in not explaining to the Greek people what will happen to their money if Greece goes bust. It will become almost worthless. As in Germany in the 1930s, they will need to fill a pram with banknotes just to buy a loaf of bread! That's what brought Adolf Hitler to power!
