Evelyn De Morgan

While browsing the Wandsworth Museum's newly opened exhibition (scroll down or CLICK) I noticed it offers a special dual ticket for the De Morgan Centre, which shares the same building. The Centre is currently showing a far more interesting exhibition: The Lost Paintings of Evelyn De Morgan (CLICK). In 1991 a fire ravaged the Bourlet’s art storage unit, where much of the De Morgan Foundation’s art collection was stored. More than 15 paintings by Evelyn De Morgan and many other artworks went up in flames! The current exhibition displays colour photos of the lost paintings together with drawings and pastel studies made for them. Above is Evelyn De Morgan's Study for Saint Christina, one of a number of studies she made in preparation for St Christina Giving her Father's Jewels to the Poor. Admission to this insight into the workings of a sublime Pre-Raphaelite artist costs only £3.50. The show runs until 20 April. If you have to choose between Modern Masters or Pre-Raphaelite mistress, plump for the mistress.
