Kongouro Saved

George Stubbs' The Kongouro From New Holland and Portrait of a Large Dog (both shown at the RA in 1773) have been saved for the nation at the last minute. The extended export ban placed in the paintings by Ed Vaizey ran out on 5 November. The appeal backed by Sir David Attenborough was still £1.5m short of its target of £5.5m until shipping magnate Eyal Ofer's Family Foundation stepped in with a donation to cover the shortfall. The National Maritime Museum in London will put the paintings on display next summer in the Queen's House. The gallery space will be named The Eyal Ofer Gallery (CLICK).
