Edith Cavell £5 coin

In response to a petition, the Royal Mint has confirmed that Norfolk heroine Edith Cavell will feature on a new £5 coin, one of a set marking the centenary of WWI to be issued next year. Shown is a £2 coin depicting the famous Lord Kitchener poster: Your Country Needs You. Edith Cavell worked as a nurse in German-occupied Belgium during the war. She helped save the lives of both German and Allied wounded soldiers, but she also helped Allied soldiers to escape across the border into the Netherlands. She was executed by a German firing squad (CLICK).
