South Bank Show

ClickITV's The South Bank Show has published the list of nominees for its 12th annual awards. The Visual Art category has three names: Mark Wallinger for State Britain, Andy Goldsworthy for Yorkshire Sculpture Park and David Adjaye for Rivington Place. Tessa Farmer is among ten artistes shortlisted for their rising talent. The awards ceremony takes place at London’s Dorchester Hotel on 29 January and will be broadcast on ITV on Sunday 3 February. A programme to avoid. Click the smiley.

About Mark Wallinger’s nomination for an award, I won’t join the general dispute of what is art and what isn’t. I just wonder why Brian Haw did not win the Turner Prize, at least for long-time performance. After all, he has remained steadfast for six-and-a-half years in Parliament Square. So, in the end what Wallinger did, seems to be a reproduction of an artwork that existed already. Shouldn’t he due copyright ?

You're not the first person to raise this point. The simple answer is that Wallinger is officially classified as an artist and Haw is deemed an "anti-war protestor"! Awarding prizes to somebody who slavishly copies another person's work is sending the wrong message as far as I'm concerned. To make matters worse, Wallinger got a group of students to do all the hard work for him. All he did was photo Brian's display and organize everything. Interestingly, one of Brian's pictures was a Banksy, and Wallinger sought Banksy's permission before copying his work. Maybe he also slipped Brian a few quid to keep him happy. I hope so.

My money's on Andy Goldsworthy for this award.
