Fontainebleau Forest
Here's a dramatic landscape by Gustave Courbet I hadn't seen before, probably because it lives in The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA, a gift of Caroline Wiess Law. The Gust of Wind (ca 1865) is one of 96 exhibits in an unusual and imaginative exhibition which doesn't look at one artist or at a school of artists, but at a forest which inspired generations of artists and photographers. In the Forest of Fontainebleau: Painters and Photographers from Corot to Monet opened yesterday at MFAH and continues until 19 October. Its first showing was at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, which jointly organized it with MFAH. Click the title link for details.
