Princess Margaret

Pietro Annigoni - Princess Margaret (1957)From 13 September to 8 March 2009 the National Portrait Gallery in London will be offering a rare chance to view Pietro Annigoni's portrait of Princess Margaret (1957), which is being loaned to the Gallery by her son, Viscount Linley. Annigoni painted Princess Margaret two years after his most celebrated commission: that world famous portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II. Draping the Princess in black set a sombre mood, a telling example of psychological portraiture? What a shame that these two portraits couldn't be hung side by side. Princess Margaret will be displayed in Room 32, together with photos of the Princess by Cecil Beaton. Norman Parkinson and other top photographers, admission free.
